Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

On Monday, I got to start my day with some of our city's littlest learners at the Easterseals Child Development Center. Easterseals is one of the many providers where thousands of young Washingtonians go every day to learn and play in nurturing, challenging, and loving environments. And we know how important child care is to our children, families, and city.?

We know that high-quality child care is critical for a child?s long-term development, it helps us keep and attract families in DC, and it creates more opportunity for parents. Making high-quality child care affordable is one of the main ways we make DC more affordable for families.

Child care

"Some of our youngest learners listen to a story."?

We also know that in DC, many of our families rely on our subsidized child care program, which pays all or part of a family?s child care costs directly to the child care provider. So, with the budget I delivered to the Council last week, we are expanding the subsidized child care program by expanding the eligibility for the subsidy from 250% to 300% of the federal poverty line. This means that instead of a $75,000 income cap for a family of four, we are now raising the cap to $90,000. We estimate that 2,200 children will become newly eligible for the subsidies. It also means that 43% of children who are zero to six in DC will be eligible for subsidized child care. That?s a big win for DC families.

As I said last week, we had some tough decisions to make in this budget. But we also made big investments in our families and our young people?? that includes our child care programs.

Muriel Bowser

Reminder: Register for the Summer Camp Lottery by Wednesday, April 5
summer camp

This year, DPR launched a?new lottery system to make the summer camp registration process more inclusive and equitable.?In recent years, without a lottery system, camp slots were filled within minutes of opening. The new lottery system has given residents nearly four weeks to?submit?their camp preferences. After the lottery registration?window closes, the registration system will randomly select participants from those who have registered.

*Families are reminded that registration for the summer camp lottery will close on Wednesday, April 5.*

The 2023 DPR summer camps will include:

* Little Explorers Camp ? (Ages 3 ? 5)
* Discovery Camp ? (Ages 6 ? 10)?
* Boost Camp ? (Ages 11 ? 13) | Boost camps offer specialty enrichment camps with an academic component. Among the specialty camps offered this year are: Rocket Camp, Robotics Camp, Esports Camp, Journalism Camp, Improv Camp and CSI.?
* Therapeutic Recreation Camps ? (Ages 3 ? 16)?

Residents will be notified by email on April 18 if their child was selected for an available summer camp and payment for the camp will be due at that time.

On Saturday, April 15, join Mayor Bowser for this year's DC Emancipation Day celebration.

This year's celebration on Freedom Plaza?will include performances by Dru Hill, Black Alley, Sin Miedo, JJ Hairston, Alex Vaughn, and more.
