My work in TX-31 and Congress Howdy Texan – After a long week in Washington, I wanted to update you on my work in Congress. First and foremost, our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the six victims of the Covenant School shooting. America's children should be safe at school. The future of our nation depends on that. I will once again be reintroducing legislation to secure America’s schools in the coming weeks. ON THE DOCKET: Preventing Veteran Suicide Supporting Higher Education Fulfilling Promises to our Veterans Carter A-Lister Award THE BRIEF: House Speaker McCarthy sent a letter to President Biden after the President and his team have been missing in action on the debt ceiling discussions, putting our already fragile economy in jeopardy by failing to negotiate. U.S. Border Patrol Agents found seventeen migrants trapped in a train car near Uvalde, Texas. Sadly, two men were pronounced dead at the scene. The border situation encourages people to put their lives in the hands of coyotes and cartel members who exploit them for money. PREVENTING VETERAN SUICIDE I met with All Points North, a group who is helping to prevent veteran suicide in the United States, to discuss how we can better enable facilities to respond and see veterans in crisis faster. Our veterans deserve the best care possible, especially when they are experiencing a mental health crisis. I am committed to finding new avenues to support our veterans. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, please call 988 or visit 988lifeline.org SUPPORTING HIGHER EDUCATION Leaders from Texas State University stopped by my office this week to catch up. We discussed the success of the TXST Round Rock campus and their plans to continue to expand the programs and majors offered! Texas’ 31st district continues to be a great place to live, work and learn because of community partners like the Texas State University System. FULFILLING PROMISES TO OUR VETERANS America made a promise to our veterans, and as Chairman of the Veterans Affairs Appropriations Committee, I’m committed to fulfilling that promise responsibly. This week, I held a hearing with the VA Secretary Denis McDonough to discuss the Department of Veterans Affair’s budget for the upcoming year. I am focused on fully funding veterans’ healthcare, working toward an electronic health record system that works for providers AND veterans, and reducing waste to improve efficiency. CARTER A-LISTER AWARD DEADLINE COMING UP! The deadline for the Carter A-Lister Award is just around the corner on April 11th. As always, thank you for taking the time to stay updated on what's happening in Texas' 31st congressional district. Follow my Facebook and Twitter accounts for more updates.
