LULAC SAYS HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CESAR CHAVEZ AND LA LUCHA CONTINUES FOR JUSTICE AND
EQUITY!
==============================================================================

Nation's Oldest and Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization Calls for a National
Holiday In Honor of Civil Rights Leader and Supports U.S. Senator Alex Padilla’s
Resolution for a Cesar Chavez National Park

Washington, DC - The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) today
celebrates the birthdate of Latino civil rights and farmworker leader, Cesar
Chavez with a grito of happy birthday and a call to action as activities in his
name are taking place around the country.

"As someone who marched with you, I wish you feliz cumpleaños and say la causa
continues, and today la lucha brought us to Houston, Texas to stop the takeover
of the disenfranchised school board leaders of one of the largest public-school
districts in the country and with 62% of the students Latino,” says Domingo
Garcia, LULAC National President. “Seizing Houston ISD as a way to stop teaching
Chicano history or to whitewash the telling of our history and removing the
stories of leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. from our textbooks, is wrong.

Today, LULAC undertakes two historic actions. First, supporting our good friend,
Senator Alex Padilla from California’s resolution to name a national park in the
name of Cesar Chavez. Also, LULAC calls for a Cesar Chavez national holiday,
which is way overdue. Future generations of Latinos must know that we marched,
fasted and stood with Cesar because his lucha is ours too. We are still presente
and issue the grito he did, ¡Si Se Puede!” said Garcia.

“In California, LULAC celebrates Cesar Chavez Day with a call to a new generation
of Latinos, many of whom are the children and grandchildren of those brave farm
workers who marched from Delano to Sacramento over nearly 300 in the name of
justicia!” says Jose Barrera, California LULAC State Director. “The struggle is
not over as the state with one of the largest population of Dreamers in America
who still await the day to be freed from the shackles of fear,” he added.

“From Arizona, LULAC says presente as we rise for all the newly arrived migrants
and refugees who seek the hope of tomorrow and a better future for their
families,” says Lydia Guzman, LULAC Immigration Chair. “As Cesar said, once
educated, we will never be humiliated again, nor will we be stopped from going
forward,” says Guzman.

“From the great Northwest, our pueblo pauses in the fields of the Yakima Valley,
the packing houses in Idaho, the factories in Oregon and the casinos in Nevada,
to say, aqui estamos Cesar, we are still here and wlll never leave!” says Rafaela
Schwan, LULAC Interim Chief Operations Offcer. “We shall never give up!,” she
adds.

“In Illinois, we proclaim que viva Cesar!” says Emma Lozano, LULAC National
Vice-President for Women. “On April 14 and 15, las mujeres de LULAC, the women of
LULAC shall gather in Los Angeles, California, and as Dolores Huerta, the
powerful Latina who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Cesar, we too, march on for
equity, equality, an end to domestic violence, and respect for all women across
America and Puerto Rico. Arriba el Pueblo!” says Lozano.
