Dear John,

Yesterday, House Republicans passed their number-one priority bill—legislation that would lease our public lands forever to the highest bidder, increase the federal deficit by billions of dollars, and raise energy utility costs for families in New Mexico.

My colleagues and I on the Democratic side of the aisle are calling it the “Polluters Over People Act”—because that’s what this bill is. It contains huge giveaways to fossil fuel and multinational mining corporations while gutting the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and National Environmental Policy Act and increasing utility costs for New Mexicans.

I voted no. On Tuesday, I spoke on the House floor to explain why.

Renewable energy has surpassed fossil fuels as the cheapest energy source, yet House Republicans continue to pursue policies that incentivize expensive fossil fuel production. New Mexicans deserve lower energy costs and our children deserve a livable future—so this is what I am doing to make this happen for New Mexico:

The Inflation Reduction Act

Last Congress, I helped pass the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA.) This legislation’s $370 billion in investments will lower energy costs for families and small businesses and accelerate private investment in clean energy solutions in every sector of the economy and every corner of the country which will create good-paying jobs and new economic opportunities for workers. To date, approximately $40.3 million has been allocated to New Mexico for clean energy, energy efficiency, and power over the past two years, with more to come! I look forward to continuing to invest in clean energy for New Mexicans for years to come.

My First Bill

My very first bill – the bipartisan Partnerships for Energy Security and Innovation Act – was signed into law as part of the CHIPS and Science Act to foster private sector investments to support DOE’s mission and to accelerate the commercialization of innovative technologies in energy, like next-generation batteries, low-carbon fuels, and advanced materials. I’m also proud to have led the launch of a new task force with the Congressional Progressive Caucus, the Accelerating Clean Energy Task Force (ACE).

Advancing Environmental Justice

As a member of the House Natural Resources Committee, I'm committed to protecting our public lands and making sure New Mexicans know I'm advocating on their behalf. I was excited to introduce the A. Donald McEachin Environmental Justice for All Act. An Act to address legacy pollution that affects marginalized communities and environmental racism by crafting comprehensive environmental justice legislation that affirms that every community has a say in the policymaking process.
