We know that you’re familiar with our campaign to pass Medicare for All nationally, but today we’re reaching out to give you an update on another important initiative we’re working on in California: CalCare.
CalCare (short for the California Guaranteed Health Care for All Act) would enact a single-payer health care system in California, similar to the legislation we’re fighting for nationally but at the state level, CalCare will guarantee high-quality, comprehensive care to all residents of the state — including medical, dental, vision, hearing, mental health, long term care, and more.
We’ve just kicked off our newest effort to pass CalCare. Our new bill, AB 1690, was introduced just a few weeks ago. This bill is what’s called a spot bill, which means that it states the intention of the legislature to work toward single-payer health care for all Californians, and we’re working now to build the movement to introduce full single-payer legislation in 2024.
This past weekend, we kicked off that work with a statewide Weekend of Action for CalCare with 50 canvass events across the state to demonstrate the power of our movement. We have even more plans to build the movement for CalCare this year, with canvasses, town halls, webinars, and more.

We need to be fighting on all fronts, at both the state level and the federal level — and passing CalCare will only make our movement for Medicare for All stronger. Thank you for being a part of this work.
In solidarity,
Nurses’ Campaign to Win Medicare for All
