States approve adult-use and medical legalization bills

John,

It’s been a huge week for cannabis law reform!

This week, marijuana gained major momentum in the Mid-Atlantic when the Delaware and Maryland legislatures approved legislation to legalize and regulate retail sales of adult-use marijuana.

“Delaware NORML commends the Senate for the swift passage of HB1 and HB2,” said Laura Sharer, Executive Director of Delaware NORML. “The advancement of these measures shows the citizens of Delaware that legislators are up to the task of implementing cannabis policy that is focused on advancing public health and social justice.”

In the Bluegrass State, the Kentucky General Assembly on Thursday sent a medical cannabis access bill to the Governor, which he signed into law earlier today. Kentucky is now the 38th state to enact comprehensive medical marijuana access!

“Today is an incredible victory for Kentucky,” said Matthew Bratcher, Executive Director of Kentucky NORML. “For years, Kentuckians have been calling for medical cannabis legalization and now they will have the freedom to safely access regulated, therapeutic products right here at home. While there is still work to be done, this is a historic step and we look forward to continuing our work representing Kentucky patients.”

In Washington, lawmakers advanced legislation prohibiting employers from administering pre-employment drug tests for marijuana. The Governor will sign the bill into law – making it the eighth state to end workplace discrimination against cannabis consumers.

And in Utah, the Governor has signed legislation into law providing funding  to establish the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research within the University of Utah. The Center will facilitate clinical trials on the use of medical cannabis in various patient populations.

These victories don’t just happen on their own. They result from the tireless advocacy of thousands of grassroots supporters like you. Today, in state capitals nationwide, our voices are being heard loud and clear.

So while we celebrate these latest victories, let’s not forget that much more work needs to be done. That is why we need your financial support today to ensure that NORML and our affiliates have the resources to keep fighting for your freedom.

Legal marijuana in Michigan means nothing to someone incarcerated for simple possession in Kansas. Safe access in Virginia won’t help a patient battling cancer in Iowa. At NORML, we won’t stop fighting until we’ve liberated all Americans. Can we count on you to stand with us?
