At least 39 people died in a fire at a migration center in Ciudad Juarez, a city on Mexico's border with the United States, officials said Tuesday.

Authorities said the fire at the office of National Migration Institute (INM) broke out after they picked up a group of migrants from the streets of the city, and detained them.

The cause of the fire or the victims' nationalities have not been released by Mexico's National Migration Institute, who have launched an investigation into the blaze, which left 29 people injured.
However, Guatemala's Institute of Migration later confirmed that at least 28 Guatemalan nationals were among those killed.

Mexico's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador also provided other details. "What we know so far is that migrants from Central America and some from Venezuela were in that shelter. We still do not know exactly the names and nationalities of those who unfortunately lost their lives," Lopez Obrador said.

PROGRAM UPDATES:
Volviendo a Casa
"Returning Home"

Earlier this month, we shared the horrific details of the boating accident near Black’s Beach which claimed 8 migrant lives. One of the victims was Yecenia Lazacano Soriano, a 22-year-old single mother to a 3-year-old daughter from Puebla, Teotihuacan.

Through our Volviendo a Casa program, we were able to coordinate with the Mexican consulate to pay for funeral expenses and preparation of the body while they arranged for transportation back to Mexico so that her family may say their final goodbyes. She is the first woman we’ve helped through this program. Yecenia Lazcano Soriano, May She Rest in Peace.

These past few weeks have been plagued with heartbreaking tragedies, from this boat accident to the recent devastating detention center fire, to the two migrants found dead in a shipping container in Texas. We find ourselves frustrated, mourning, and hurting at the violence surrounding these deaths. Our hearts are with the friends and families of each of these victims. We cannot ignore the loss of life at our southern border, and continue to denounce the many policies at work which are the root cause of these tragedies. We continue to provide humanitarian aid to those crossing in hopes of preventing more deaths.

Water Drop:

This spring break we had UC Berkeley Public Service Center Alternative Breaks visit us for a Day Laborer Outreach and Water Drop! UC Berkeley is one of the many recurring groups we have had the pleasure of working with over the years. We want to thank this group not only for their respect and attentiveness but for the preparedness and vast knowledge they had of the work we do.

This small but mighty group of 10 individuals joined our Educational Programs Coordinator Ana, on a route to leave over a dozen gallons of water, canned food, hand warmers for the extreme cold weather and rain, and messages of love for migrants crossing through.

Shelter Aid:

We continue to support 14 migrant shelters in Tijuana including Puerto Esperanza from Ejercito de Salvacion. This shelter houses women and young children specifically. Through your donations, we were able to purchase supplies for art and school supplies and provide a class for the kids in that shelter. Your donations also help buy groceries like baby formula, cereal, etc.!

Our Shelter Aid program continues to provide holistic support to 15 shelters in Tijuana, feeding and assisting hundreds of migrants daily. Help us help migrant families as we cover rent, utilities, groceries, provide mental health workshops and services through our partnership with Psicologos Sin Fronteras, B.C. and more!

Two Migrants Found Dead and 13 Others on Train in Texas, Authorities Say
The bodies of two people believed to be migrants who had crossed into Texas from Mexico were found on Friday, along with 13 more people, including at least five who were in critical condition, inside a shipping container on a train in Uvalde County, officials said.

The train, which was stopped by U.S. Border Patrol agents, was traveling near the town of Knippa through an area of Texas known for frequent immigration crossings.

At 3:50 p.m., a person called 911 and told dispatchers that about 12 to 15 people were experiencing severe symptoms of dehydration and were trapped inside a sweltering shipping container in an area where spring temperatures have hovered in the 80s in recent days, said Daniel Rodriguez, the chief of police for the city of Uvalde, about 11 miles west of Knippa. “The way they said it was, they were suffocating — they were having trouble breathing,” he said.

Woman, man who died in human smuggling disaster off Black’s Beach identified
Border Angels, a local nonprofit, will help at least one family repatriate the body of their loved one, according to interim Executive Director Edward Orendain.

The organization has a program called Volviendo a Casa — Spanish for returning home — that partners with the Mexican consulate in San Diego to pay for costs such as caskets, preparation and travel when migrants die crossing the San Diego border.

“We pool our resources to help fly the body back to where they’re from so that the family can give them a proper burial in their home city or town and have a place to go and honor and be with the deceased,” Orendain said. “It’s our way just to help give them a proper burial, a dignified burial.”

Orendain said the nonprofit usually contributes between $3,000 and $5,000 and assists one family a month on average. Sometimes the Mexican consulate and funeral homes in San Diego also contribute.

So far, the organization is helping the family of Lazcano — a 22-year-old single mother of a 3-year-old girl — recover her body.

Orendain said he anticipates the families of other migrants who drowned off Black’s Beach will ask for assistance, too.
