Our Annual Gun Law Scorecard grades and ranks states on their gun laws.

John—

Today we launched our Annual Gun Law Scorecard, which grades and ranks states on their gun laws. Did your state get a passing grade?

Year after year, the evidence has been clear and consistent: states with strong gun laws have lower gun death rates, while states with weak laws have higher rates. We know gun laws save lives—but only in the states willing to act.

Check out the Annual Gun Law Scorecard and see how your state stacks up.

America’s inconsistent patchwork of gun safety laws undermines progress and leaves everyone vulnerable. As my colleague Kelly Drane told CNN today, guns from states with weak laws are trafficked into states with strong laws, driving violence rates up, particularly in cities.

Even so, states with weak laws still suffer the most—of the 20 states with the highest gun death rates, 17 of those states received Fs for their gun laws and none received As. Mississippi, a state with some of the weakest gun laws in the country, has 10 times the gun death rate of Massachusetts, which has some of the strongest laws.

The solutions to American gun violence aren’t a mystery—we just need more leaders who will stand up to the gun lobby and embrace the policies proven to save lives. I hope you’ll take a look at the findings in our Annual Gun Law Scorecard.

Gratefully,
Allison

PS: If you’re with us, please chip in to support our efforts to pass comprehensive, effective gun safety laws in every state!
