Dear Neighbor,
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Congress passed a law requiring continuous Medi-Cal coverage (California's version of Medicaid), which protected people from losing their coverage during the public health emergency. This resulted in hundreds of thousands of people getting health insurance through Medi-Cal, and more Californians have health coverage today than ever before.
On March 31, 2023, this provision expires. Beginning April 1, LA County's Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) will begin reviewing eligibility for Medi-Cal recipients over the next 14 months. DPSS will mail you a letter about your Medi-Cal eligibility, the letter will tell you if: (1) your county needs information from you to renew your Medi-Cal, (2) your Medi-Cal was renewed automatically, or (3) you no longer qualify.
If you receive health insurance through Medi-Cal, please check your mailbox and respond immediately to any letter you recieve from DPSS.
I want to make sure you and your family can either stay covered by Medicaid or find an affordable health insurance option if you no longer qualify for health coverage through the program.
If you receive a letter notifying you that you can no longer qualify for Medi-Cal, Covered California's service center will connect you to a certified enrollment counselor right away to assess your coverage options. For help, you can go to Covered California's website or call (800) 300-1506.
There are 3 ways to complete your annual renewal and report changes online.
- ONLINE: You can visit California's Department of Health Services' website and make sure your address, phone number, and email address are updated.
- BY MAIL: If your mailing address is current, you will receive a PACKET three months before it is due. Complete and return the PACKET by the due date.
- OVER THE PHONE: Call the LA County DPSS Customer Service hotline at 866-613-3777 Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 6:30pm.
If you need help navigating or filling out the redetermination packet, in-person assistance is available depending on where you live.
