Friend, as the Chair of the Texas House LGBTQ Caucus and an openly LGBTQIA+ legislator, I am committed to fighting alongside my colleagues against any and all legislation that demeans, disrespects, and dehumanizes the LGBTQIA+ community. Yesterday, I listened to the Texas Senate floor debate on SB 14 -- a bill to ban life-saving healthcare for trans kids. Earlier this week, the Texas House Public Health Committee heard testimony on a similar bill, HB 1686.
Let’s be real -- trans Texans already face barriers that prevent them from living a full, authentic life without fear. And instead of passing laws that address the real problems facing our state, certain legislators continue to use their power to attack the most marginalized members of our communities and exacerbate the barriers they face.
But Friend, we’ve got news for them: trans and nonbinary Texans are part of what makes our state great. They are contributing in every industry, serving every community, and advocating at the forefront of every fight for justice. On Trans Day of Visibility, we honor their achievements in every sector -- from arts and entertainment, to STEM, to journalism, politics, advocacy, and more. Today is about celebration, representation, and justice -- because trans rights are human rights.
We will proudly continue to fight alongside our allies against oppressive and dangerous bills that threaten to erase the existence of trans people and focus on proactive legislation to address actual problems that face Texas, like daily gun violence, depleting public school funds and lack of access to essential healthcare.
To trans Texans across our state: we see you. We celebrate you. We love you. Let’s keep fighting together to build the better Texas you deserve.
In solidarity,
Rep. Mary González
Texas House District 75
