Dear John,
For more than a year and half, Color Of Change and coalition partners on the ground in Atlanta have been pushing back against the construction of Cop City.
The Atlanta Police Foundation, backed by corporate donors, is trying to turn 85 acres of forestland in Southeast Atlanta into a massive police training facility nicknamed “Cop City.”
TELL DEKALB COUNTY: NO COP CITY
In September 2021, Color Of Change members like you provided the Atlanta City Council with hours and hours of public comments that overwhelmingly opposed the Cop City proposal. At the time, the City Council, which included now-Mayor Andre Dickens, ignored our voices and decided to move forward with the project.
Concerned residents in DeKalb County have continued to voice their opposition to the Atlanta Police Foundation’s plans for the massive police training facility. Color Of Change has stood with partners such as Community Movement Builders and Defend the Atlanta Forest to delay and stop the destruction of this vital green space.
The Atlanta Police Department — the same police force that murdered Rayshard Brooks in June 2020 and continues to terrorize Black people — doesn’t need “Cop City” and Atlantans don’t support it. This massive training facility would not only result in an ecological nightmare, it would encourage the continued militarization and expansion of policing and put Black DeKalb County residents in danger.
John, we must stop Cop City. With your help and continued pressure on the DeKalb County Zoning Board of Appeals, we will keep that fight going strong.
Thank you for taking action on this issue.
