I’ve been told I’m an underdog in this race, and when I hear that I look
around the room…because I don’t think of myself as an underdog. And I’m
not, because I have all of you on our team.

But I’m not naive to the challenges this race presents. Polling has us
just two points behind another candidate, a small and certainly not
insurmountable gap.

A bright spot in that poll is the fact that I’m leading the county I
represent in Congress by nine points. When I’m able to introduce myself to
voters, we gain a clear advantage. That’s why I’m asking for your support
to help us ramp up our campaign and get our message out there.

John, I don’t “do Congress” like
most people do. I was the only Democrat in the House to oppose “earmarks,”
a way of funding Members’ pet projects. I’m leading the fight to ban
congressional stock trading, and I’m one of just eleven Members of
Congress who doesn't take checks from lobbyists.

My life looks different than most of my colleagues: I’m the only single
mom of school aged kids serving in the House, and I’d be the only one in
the Senate.

California needs a warrior in the Senate to fight the battles of
tomorrow—creating an economy that works for everyone, lowering the cost of
housing, and fighting for our planet.
