My brother, Dylan, is one of the bravest people I know. When he came out as trans, I was so happy he could live as his true, authentic self. But it also breaks my heart that, for trans people everywhere, simply living their lives every day is an act of profound bravery.
Because - despite all the incredible progress we’ve made - the world is still so hostile for trans people. And they can’t fight hostility, transphobia, and bigotry alone. It’s up to all of us to stand in solidarity with our trans siblings - to demand safety, dignity, and respect.
Today is International Transgender Day of Visibility, and I have one important ask of you: Will you stand with me in support of the trans community, against hate and violence? Today, we honor the lives and incredible achievements of trans people around the world, and celebrate the courage it takes to live authentically. We owe it to our trans siblings to amplify their voices - and we’d also be remiss to ignore the stark, cruel realities they endure every day. While our society has become much more accepting in recent years, hateful and ignorant rhetoric abounds, and too many right-wing political leaders spend their time proposing cruel policy ideas rather than solving problems.
I’m not going to spend this day focusing only on the negatives, but I will say this: People like Donald Trump are leading a mob of hate that intentionally makes life more dangerous for queer and trans kids every single day, and that has real consequences. Last year there was a 12x increase in anti-LGBTQ+ violence. The threats to this community are real, deadly, and growing by the day. A record number of anti-trans bills have been introduced in state legislatures in recent years, including more than 700 bills between 2021 and 2023.
For these reasons and more, we also have to recognize that not everyone wants to be visible, nor does everyone have the resources or support to be their true selves. We need to stand in solidarity with trans people, wherever they are in their journey. That begins with saying proudly:
You are perfect.
You are seen.
