John,
One year ago today, the Trump administration enacted its "Remain in Mexico" policy. For tens of thousands of families legally seeking asylum in the U.S., it was the start of a nightmare.
Under the policy, mothers, babies, and anyone else fleeing violence are sent to languish in overcrowded, unsanitary shelters and camps in Mexico.
They face mortal danger -- from assault, to kidnapping, to sexual violence, to murder. The danger is so high at some parts of the border that the State Department considers it on par with the warzones in Syria and Afghanistan.
Some families are forced to make the gut-wrenching choice to send their children across the border alone, where they'll be detained by the authorities.
Imagine the desperation these parents face when making such a decision.
We don't have to accept this unconscionable cruelty.
Congress can end Trump's shameful "Remain in Mexico" policy today. Send your Representative a message right now and tell them: Stand up for migrant families, and pass the Asylum Seeker Protection Act!
As you read this, the House of Representatives is deciding whether to advance the Asylum Seeker Protection Act, an important bill introduced by Rep. Veronica Escobar, which would defund Trump's heartless "Remain in Mexico" policy and guarantee due process for the migrant families and children who are waiting for their asylum hearings.
The need for this vital bill is urgent -- because right now, the Trump administration is intentionally putting people at risk. Since the policy went into effect last year, more than 57,000 asylum seekers have been made to wait for their hearings in Mexico, many in unsanitary and dangerous camps.
We are a country that takes care of families, not one that puts them into harm's way. It's time for us to start acting like it.
Every single moment that Congress waits to act puts asylum seekers at risk. So on this day, the anniversary of Trump's horrific policy, let's send a message that Congress can't ignore: Please, tell your Representative that there's no time to waste: they need to do everything in their power to rush the Asylum Seeker Protection Act into law.
Thanks for standing with me, John.
Sincerely,
Jess Morales Rocketto
