#StopTheMerger Coalition plans local actions next week
Calling the proposed merger of Kroger and Albertsons “a looming disaster for everyone who buys groceries in America,” the #StopTheMerger Coalition is organizing a national week of activities around the country next week. Local actions will take place on April 4 and April 5; click here for details or check our online calendar. The Coalition is a national network of more than 100 organizations and unions representing over 100,000 Kroger and Albertsons workers in twelve states and the District of Columbia opposing the Kroger/Albertsons merger. Painters DC 51 supports WB Waste workers
DC Jobs with Justice on Wednesday joined Painters DC 51’s campaign to support workers who want the right to organize at WB Waste, a waste management company based in Capitol Heights, MD. “The workers reached out to DC51 because of the poor working conditions and want to be represented," reported Zach Galis, DC51 organizing director. “The employer is treating them badly and firing those who speak with the union and DC51 organizers have been listening and working hard on this campaign to help the workers have a voice.”

Cowboys earning $40 per month begin what is to become an unsuccessful 2 1/2 month strike for higher wages at five ranches in the Texas Panhandle - 1883

April 1
Longest newspaper strike in U.S. history, 114 days, ends in New York City. Workers at nine newspapers were involved – 1963

April 2
Hershey, Pennsylvania witnessed a six-day sit-down strike of workers at the Hershey Chocolate Corporation in 1937. The strike ended in violence, as dairy workers and non-striking Hershey employees stormed the factory to force out strikers (photo). Eventually, Hershey Corporation workers signed an agreement with the Bakery and Confectionery International Union, becoming one of the first American candy companies to unionize.
