Pro Life Awareness event responds to report that three-day wait may be abolished (http://)
Supporters of the Pro Life Campaign gathered outside Leinster House yesterday to respond to a report in the Irish Times which claimed the three-day waiting period for reflection may be removed from Irish abortion legislation as part of the forthcoming review.

The three-day waiting period was a key promise of the government in the run up to the May 2018 referendum which assuaged many ‘soft’ Yes voters to ultimately vote to repeal the Eighth Amendment. Even then-Tánaiste Simon Coveney supported a Yes vote on the basis of promised safeguards like the three-day waiting period. If the government now proceeds to strip away the last vestiges of live-saving elements of the abortion law like the three-day wait, they are running roughshod over important promises from just four years ago.

As we know from replies to parliamentary questions, in the first three years of the Irish abortion regime, we have seen almost 4,000 women who did not proceed from their first appointment to having an abortion. Not all of these cases related to pregnant women changing their minds on abortion, but it is a solid indication that thousands availed of the three-day waiting period for reflection and ultimately opted to continue with their pregnancies. Thus, there are thousands of children alive today who may otherwise have been aborted.

Unfortunately, the Irish government has proved uninterested in justifying the rationale behind the three-day waiting period or in pointing to its merits. Instead, government language has often focused on how to overcome “problems” associated with the waiting period. This is unhelpful and points to the inherent flaws in the review process which have been pinpointed by the PLC on several occasions since its launch in December 2021.
Oireachtas committee on euthanasia/assisted suicide to be set up by mid-April (http://)

It has been reported that the Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying, chaired by pro-life TD from Kerry Michael Healy-Rae, will be established on 19 April after the Oireachtas returns from its Easter Break.

Although it was reported in January that this committee was being established with Deputy Healy-Rae as chairperson, there was a delay in the announcement of nominated committee members. It has since been announced that five senators will participate in the committee: independents RĂłnĂĄn Mullen and Lynn Ruane, Labour's Annie Hoey; Fianna FĂĄil's Fiona O'Loughlin; and Fine Gael's Mary Seery Kearney.

Government TDs include Patrick Costello of the Green Party; Alan Farrell and Emer Higgins of Fine Gael; and John Lahart and Robert Troy of Fianna FĂĄil.

The Opposition deputies are Sinn FĂ©in's Sorca Clarke and Pa Daly, along with Gino Kenny of People Before Profit.

The committee will be important to examine issues related to euthanasia and assisted suicide, contentious topics which some radical politicians have sought to shoehorn into Irish political discourse. In addition to the chairman, the presence of pro-life senator RĂłnĂĄn Mullen is to be welcomed.

Senator Mullen already drew attention to the leading language contained in the official description of the main task of the committee, that it would "consider and recommend for policy change and/or legislative change” regarding euthanasia. He rightly pointed out this would appear to be preclude the possibility that the Joint Committee could recommend against any legislative and/or policy change in this area.
Man charged in connection with firebombing of pro-life office in Wisconsin (http://)

Federal authorities in the United States have announced that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the firebombing of an office of Wisconsin Family Action in Madison on 8 May 2022. The attack was one of a series of violent direct actions carried out in the wake of the release of the leaked draft opinion which indicated the United States Supreme Court was about to overturn Roe v Wade.

The alleged attacker, 29-year-old Hridindu Sankar Roychowdhury, was arrested at an airport in Boston in connection with the attack. Evidence at the time indicated the attacker had hurled two explosive Molotov cocktails at the building. The building was also spraypainted with threatening graffiti reading “If abortions aren't safe then you aren't either.” The building was empty at the time, and no one was injured.

DNA evidence extracted from the glass jar used as an explosive device allowed federal authorities to later track down the suspect. In January 2023, police identified via CCTV footage a man spray-painting “We will get our revenge” on capitol grounds in Atlanta in similar script to the Madison attack. Through this, they identified the attacker’s identity based on a vehicle he left the scene in. On 1 March, law enforcement saw a man driving the vehicle, who discarded of an empty fast-food bag, which allowed them to match the DNA evidence from the crime in Wisconsin with Mr Roychowdhury.

Despite the extreme and ideologically motivated nature of the attacks, widespread awareness or condemnation of the story has not been forthcoming. In an Irish context, if the shoe were on the other foot, one could safely predict Irish audiences would be regularly treated to coverage of such an attack.

Do you have pro-life material which could be historically relevant? ()
We are putting out a call for anyone in possession of any documents, photographs, correspondence, etc. relevant to the Irish pro-life movement throughout the decades. We are particularly keen to receive anything in your possession related to periods such as the 1983 referendum. A comprehensive history of the pro-life movement is yet to be written, but the historians of the future will need primary sources. We are asking for people to get in touch with the Pro Life Campaign (mailto:[email protected]) if they possess such material (no matter how old or dusty!) to ensure it is preserved now and not lost to the ages.
Petition to DEFUND the National Women’s Council, Final push needed for signatures of our petition to defund the National Women's Council! ()

Sign the petition and spread the word! ([link removed])

Over 2,800 people have signed the petition in the past weeks calling for the defunding of the National Women’s Council, the taxpayer funded body leading an aggressive push at present for late-term abortion on request to be legalised.

By signing the petition below, you will be adding your voice to the call to defund the NWCI and start over with something better in its place.

It’s disgraceful the way the NWCI claims to represent ALL women, while completely brushing aside the concerns of women who regret their abortions and the majority of women who want to see alternatives to abortion promoted.

The changes we want to see happen won’t occur overnight but that shouldn’t dissuade us from getting started. Together, we must shine a light on the unfairness of what’s happening in order to bring about change.

When you’ve signed the petition, please share the link with family and friends and encourage them to be part of the effort as well. Thanks for all your help!
