John,
conservatives are working harder than ever
to strip progressive prosecutors of their local powers across many cities
in the country.

In fact, there are at least 37 bills that have been introduced in 17
states that will strip power from our progressive DAs. This new
unprecedented, coordinated attack by conservatives is spreading like
wildfire across the country and we need to get in front of it NOW.

Let’s recap: Since 2017, we have been able to elect over two dozen civil
rights-minded leaders in some of the biggest cities in the United States.

And as we’ve seen, conservatives have taken notice.

GOP megadonors and the police union pooled together their resources to
remove Chesa Boudin from office in San Francisco. In Florida, Governor Ron
DeSantis suspended and removed the DA in Tampa, Andrew Warren from office
and handpicked someone to replace him. DeSantis’ team literally said that
one of the benefits was that “a leftist prosecutor is removed from a
position of power.” They aren’t even hiding it, and now DeSantis is coming
after Monique Worrell.

And the attacks continue to build.

Conservatives in many states like Mississippi, Georgia, and Texas are
employing a new tactic: passing laws that will give local prosecutorial
powers to state-level officials and even give these officials the power to
fine and REMOVE our DAs.

This is a major attack on not just one DA, and it’s not happening in just
one state. These attacks span the ENTIRE country and if we don’t fight
back now, all of our work to end mass incarceration, hold police
accountable, and free innocent people could be rolled back.

attack has significant repercussions for criminal reform DAs and our
entire movement for justice and accountability.

We’ve elected progressive DAs in many cities where the state government is
run by conservatives, including in Florida, Texas, Mississippi, and
Missouri. And those conservatives are pushing to give local powers to the
Attorney General which would undermine or outright strip local DAs of
their powers.

Conservatives can’t beat us in elections, so now they are BLATANTLY
attacking DAs who were democratically elected by voters.

Every dollar we raise goes into fighting these battles, but it’s been hard
to keep up with so many states launching attacks. And this is what
conservatives want, to overwhelm us so that we can’t make sure that our
leaders who were elected by the people, remain in power, and work for the
people. And it’s why our upcoming fundraising deadline is so critical.
