Dear John,

In case you missed it, Michelle Mello from the Center for Health Policy at the Stanford University School of Medicine joined us on A Health Podyssey to discuss her recently published paper assessing public health laws during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a new Health Policy Brief published today, Dariush Mozaffarian outlines how measuring and addressing nutrition security can help achieve health and health equity.

Nutrition-related disease causes significant morbidity and mortality and contributes to health inequities. Although often associated with food insecurity, which is about access to calories, nutrition insecurity is about access to healthful, nourishing foods.

In the brief, Mozaffarian discusses the evolution of health care, public health, and policy toward nutrition security. Key points in the brief include:

  • New screening tools and interventions for nutrition security should be centered on the assessment and consideration of health equity.

  • Health system interventions to bring about nutrition security include medically tailored meals, produce prescriptions, food education for both patients and providers, and electronic nutrition security screening and referral tools.

A Texas judge recently issued a decision preventing the government from enforcing the ACA’s requirement that all insurers cover certain preventive care services without asking patients to pay anything out of pocket.

In a Forefront piece published today, Nicholas Bagley and A. Mark Fendrick review the implications of the decision and how it might affect preventive care.

Elsewhere in Forefront, Richard Hughes IV argues that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has the administrative authority to resolve the coverage challenges that senior citizens face for current and future vaccines through three potential pathways.
