She spoke with calm and consistent wisdom, passion, and knowledge on behalf of the 95,000 school nurses in the U.S. Covering lessons learned from COVID-19 and the H1N1 pandemic, Mazyck's testimony addressed the use of layered mitigation strategies, NASN's priority on equitable in-person learning, the mental health consequences for students and the school nurse's role, how we can look and move forward, and more. Concussion Management Practices in Schools | |
|
Evidence-based practices in concussion management have been codified into legislation. However, legislation is varied, and implementation is narrowly evaluated. School nurses hold a unique position to assess the implementation of health policies. The Journal of School Nursing (JOSN) article, Implementation of Concussion Management Policies in High Schools: The Critical Role of School Nurses, describes the implementation of concussion management practices in Massachusetts high schools from the perspective of the school nurse. Survey responses alongside qualitative nurse responses are presented and offer nursing perspectives on the clinical uptake efforts in their school.

| Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Funding Opportunity | The Wildfire Smoke Preparedness in Community Buildings grant program is open for applications through May 9. This program provides grants and cooperative agreements to States, local educational agencies, and more for the assessment, prevention, control, and/or abatement of wildfire smoke hazards. EPA anticipates awarding approximately 13-18 grants, ranging from $100,000 to $2,000,000, and will host an information session for potential applicants on April 10 at 3 p.m. ET. Questions about the application process can be submitted to [email protected] through April 27. Learn more. | FDA Approves First Over-the-Counter Naloxone Nasal Spray | |
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Narcan, a 4-milligram naloxone hydrochloride nasal spray for over-the-counter (OTC), nonprescription use. This action paves the way for the life-saving medication to reverse an opioid overdose to be sold directly to consumers. The manufacturer will determine the availability timeline and price. The FDA will work with all stakeholders to help facilitate the continued availability of naloxone nasal spray products during the time needed to implement the Narcan switch from prescription to OTC status. Other formulations and dosages of naloxone will remain available by prescription only.
