New Orleans DSA - Weekly Update

Tomorrow, Friday, March 31st is International Transgender Day of Visibility. At a time when the rights of people in our transgender community are under historic attack, it's more important than ever to stand up, your support, and fight back. Please join us and our comrades in Real Name Campaign for a Rally and March at 5:30pm at Washington Square Park (700 Elysian Fields).

We are already tracking bills prefiled in the Louisiana State House and Senate that target trans and gender nonconforming youth, including HB 81, which encourages the misgendering of students. We expect more egregious bills to come as the session continues. Republicans have already filed and passed bills in Texas and Tennessee blocking access to gender-affirming care and banning drag shows. We cannot allow these assaults to continue. Bring a sign if you can and show up on Friday. We hope to see you there.

Then, on Saturday, April 1st, 2023, 5PM-8 PM, our Make Entergy Pay Campaign will be hitting the streets with a guerilla messaging campaign. Join us at the Velveteen Lounge & Restaurant (2565 Bayou Rd, New Orleans) to help us get the word out about everyone's least favorite utility company. Meet up with fellow travelers, pick up materials, and let's get the word out about how we can stick it to our local private power monopoly.

Next week, on Monday April 3, our Local Council will hold its regular monthly meeting to discuss the business of the chapter as well as plan around the chapter's strategic objectives. Local Council is New Orleans DSA's elected leadership body, but everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. If you're looking to get plugged in with chapter activities, it's a great opportunity to do so. If you have questions, or want to submit agenda items for consideration by the Local Council, please email [email protected]. Register for the meeting here.

Solidarity forever,

DSA New Orleans Local Council

Not yet a member? The most important tool that the working class has is organization. We're strong when we fight together. We have to build a durable, mass political organization to wield the kind of power we need to win real change in our society. If you aren't a dues-paying member of DSA yet, join today!
