This National Doctors' Day, I wanted to reach out to you personally as I reflect and take stock of the hardworking health professionals around the world who have been unceasing in their efforts to save lives, even amidst uncertainty and unfathomable disaster.
Doctors launched into action when devastating earthquakes hit Türkiye (Turkey) and Syria last month. They not only provided immediate, urgent care to survivors with broken bones and deadly lacerations, but they've also addressed chronic conditions that persist even through crises as communities struggle to rebuild.
Doctors staffed mobile clinics and offered mental health and psychosocial support after millions fled Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year – even as health facilities were under attack.
In my work as Chief Medical Officer of Americares, I am humbled every day by the immense strength and perseverance essential health workers show in the face of difficulty, always prioritizing others' lives over their own.
