One thing you may know about my story is that I am a refugee.
When I was just a young child, my family was forced to escape civil war in Somalia, and we took sanctuary in a Kenyan refugee camp for four years.
We didn't always have food, or running water. But we did always hold out hope that one day, we would be able to get out of that camp and start a new life in the United States.
At the time, I never could have even imagined I would someday run for office — nevermind become the first African-born member of Congress, or that tens of thousands of people across the country would be with me along the way.
I wouldn't have believed you if you told me. No way.
Each and every thing that our campaigns and our work in Congress has accomplished has only ever been possible because of people like you, and I want you to know that I am incredibly grateful to have your trust and support.
Every day I count my blessings — but the fact is, we still have a lot of work to do.
