*Growth in the Nation?s Largest Counties Rebounds in 2022*
"*Counties with large colleges and universities experience population gains once again.*"
*MARCH 30, 2023* ? After some of the nation's most populous counties experienced significant outmigration and population declines in 2021, overall patterns of population growth and decline are moving towards pre-pandemic rates for the nation?s 3,144 counties according to the U.S. Census Bureau?s Vintage 2022 estimates [ [link removed] ]?of population and components of change released today. All 10 of the top fastest-growing counties were in the South or West.
?The migration and growth patterns for counties edged closer to pre-pandemic levels this year,? said Dr. Christine Hartley, assistant division chief for estimates and projections in the Census Bureau?s population division. ?Some urban counties, such as Dallas and San Francisco, saw domestic outmigration at a slower pace between 2021 and 2022, compared to the prior year. Meanwhile, many counties with large universities saw their populations fully rebound this year as students returned.? ??

Texas Population [ [link removed] ]
"Written by*:* Kristie Wilder"
Texas is now one of only two U.S. states with a population of 30 million or
more: the nation?s second-most-populous state reached a population milestone by passing the 30-million threshold.
Texas?s population in 2022 was 30,029,572, second only to California
(39,029,342), not surprising given its consistent place in recent years among the nation?s fastest-growing, largest-gaining states.
From 2000 to 2022, the population of 11 of Texas?s 254 counties more than doubled, according to July 1, 2022 population estimates released today.

*Two Years Into Pandemic, Domestic Migration Trends Shifted*
Migration Map [ [link removed] ]
"Written by: Luke Rogers, Marc Perry and Lindsay Spell"
The COVID-19 pandemic changed the U.S. population in many ways, including births, deaths [ [link removed] ] and international migration [ [link removed] ]. One of its more intriguing impacts was on domestic migration patterns.
Some longstanding trends accelerated, such as outmigration from large urban areas in the Northeast, while other trends reversed, resulting in some small rural counties gaining rather than losing population.
Today?s release of Vintage 2022 population estimates provides a snapshot of changes in domestic migration during the first years of the pandemic.
Note that we include the change in the nation?s group quarters (GQ) population in the estimates? net domestic migration component. But we excluded it from this analysis (due to the volatility of this population during the pandemic) to focus only on household population movement.
