Dear John,

Most people in the Middle East have spent some or all of their lives under authoritarian governments. Since the first edition of Freedom in the World was published in 1973, only two countries in the region, Lebanon and Israel, have been categorized as Free.

Yet the desire for freedom persists. In the Middle East, it was most dramatically exemplified by the mass antigovernment protests that have spread throughout Iran, which persist today even in the face of a brutal government crackdown.

While fundamental freedoms are under attack across most of the region, the findings of Freedom in the World 2023 also offer reason for hope.

Declaration of Democratic Principles Calling on Democratic Governments to Act

This week, more than 80 leading democracy and human rights-focused organizations from around the world released “A Civil Society Declaration of Democratic Principles

” coordinated by Freedom House, The George W. Bush Institute, and the McCain Institute. The Declaration reflects the expertise of 14 thematically focused working groups established during the Summit for Democracy’s “Year of Action” composed of civil society and government leaders.

Imprisoned Without Just Cause: #FreeThemAll

This week, in honor of the Summit for Democracy, Freedom House joined the U.S. Department of State, and the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania for an in-person panel discussion and reception dedicated to raising awareness of the staggering rate of political imprisonment worldwide. Sviatlana Tsihanouskaya, leader of the Belarusian democratic movement, gave the keynote address which was followed by a panel discussion. Watch the recording of this powerful event below.
