Investigating how Cigna denies coverage

Hi Reader,

You come to ProPublica because you’re interested in the big stories — the ones that haven’t been told yet because telling them requires a lot of resources. ProPublica often has teams of reporters working on one story together, gathering facts, analyzing data, locating sources and more. While the process is time-consuming, these stories often shine a light on injustice and bad behavior.

Like this investigation <[link removed]> from last Saturday. Cigna, one of the country’s largest insurers, has built a system that allows its doctors to instantly reject a claim on medical grounds without so much as opening the patient’s file, leaving the insured with unexpected bills. This system allows Cigna’s staff doctors to reject tens of thousands of claims per month, despite many state laws that call for insurance company doctors to review patient files and use their expertise to decide whether to approve or deny claims. The person who helped create this system says that it has “undoubtedly saved billions of dollars” for the insurance companies.

This series has been months in the making, and we’re just getting started. But we know it’s worth it. We invest the time and resources needed to tell these stories because we know that when we shine a light on wrongdoing like this, it can lead to change. In fact, our work has an unparallelled track record of spurring impact: Laws get passed, policies get reversed, innocent people are freed and more.

ProPublica is able to do all of this because we have members standing with us, supporting and funding this critical work. Tomorrow is the final day of our spring member drive. In the last two weeks, over 1,000 readers have stepped up with a donation to help support journalism that holds the powerful to account. Today I’m asking for you to join us, too. <[link removed]> Any amount makes you a member, and you’ll be helping us to shine an even brighter light on the big stories that need to be told.

Warmly, Ragan Rhyne Senior Vice President, Development Proud ProPublican <[link removed]>
