Democrats Have No Answers for Why the IRS Appeared at Matt Taibbi’s Home the Day of His Testimony Before Congress

Katie Pavlich: Speaking to reporters at the White House Wednesday, National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby was asked why an IRS agent showed up at the home of veteran journalist Matt Taibbi on the day he testified about the weaponization of government on Capitol Hill. Kirby was also asked if the White House is concerned about the intimidation, given President Joe Biden’s remarks at an event earlier in the day about the need to protect the press from persecution. Kirby refused to answer the question (Townhall). New York Post: Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, whose department includes the IRS, also was pressed for answers Wednesday by House lawmakers. “It’s certainly something that I would want to look into,” Yellen replied. “I’m not aware that IRS agents do that, except as you said, in cases where there’s an investigation for law-breaking that’s underway.” Taibbi said the IRS agent who visited his New Jersey home left a note instructing him to call the tax bureau four days later. When he did, an IRS agent reportedly told him that his returns for 2018 and 2021 had been rejected due to identity theft concerns (New York Post).

Arizona Freedom Caucus: Less than 12 hours after the tragic shooting in Nashville by a deranged transgender activist katiehobbs’ Press Secretary calls for shooting people Democrats disagree with. California Introduces Legislation Allowing Children to Check Themselves into Government Homes
Free Beacon: California Democrats on Tuesday advanced a bill that would let children as young as 12 years old check into group homes without parental consent, which critics say would enable the “state-sanctioned kidnapping” of children. The state’s Assembly Judiciary Committee approved the bill, which would allow mental health professionals to commit children to residential facilities upon request, even if the child had not claimed abuse or neglect. The bill instructs counselors to determine whether or not to inform a patient’s parents “after consulting with the minor.” The bill’s authors say their bill is meant to address recent increases in suicide among “youth, particularly Black and Latinx youth” (Free Beacon). HotAir: This isn’t a minority issue. The bill’s language specifically calls out “LGBTQ+ youth” who face “rejection” of their “identity” from their parents. The bill’s authors allege that this results in them being denied “access to mental health services” (HotAir).

Karine Jean-Pierre Side Steps Assault Weapons Ban Question After Biden Demands We Ban Them
Fox News: White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre dodged a question Wednesday on whether President Biden’s proposed “assault weapons” ban will lead to the confiscation of millions of semi-automatic rifles from law-abiding Americans. Biden on Tuesday renewed his call for an “assault weapons” ban, claiming there is a “moral price to pay for inaction” by Republican lawmakers who oppose such a measure (Fox News). Townhall: REPORTER: “Does the president support, not just banning the sale and manufacture of semi-automatic weapons, but further than that, confiscation?” KJP: “They are weapons of war and they should not be on the streets” (Twitter). RNC Research: Yesterday, Sen. John Kennedy asked Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas if he could give the definition of assault weapons he wants to ban. He couldn’t give a definition. John Kennedy asked Mayorkas again today, and he still couldn’t (Twitter).

Speaker McCarthy to Meet with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen in California, China Promises Retaliation
Wall Street Journal: China said it would retaliate if House Speaker Kevin McCarthy meets with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen during her planned stop in California next week, further stoking tensions around a highly scrutinized visit that is poised to test strained ties between Beijing and Washington. Ms. Tsai is set to meet with Mr. McCarthy and other Republican members of Congress at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley on her way back from visits to Guatemala and Belize. A meeting with Mr. McCarthy would be seen by Beijing as a provocation that harms China’s sovereignty, said Zhu Fenglian, spokeswoman for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office (Wall Street Journal). NBC: The status of Taiwan is among the most sensitive issues in U.S.-China relations, which were already at their lowest point in decades when Secretary of State Antony Blinken postponed a planned trip to Beijing last month over a Chinese surveillance balloon that was detected and shot down over U.S. territory (NBC).

D.C. Attorney Refused to Prosecute 70 Percent of Arrested Suspects in 2022
Washington Examiner: The U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C., declined to prosecute nearly 70% of people arrested by police officers in 2022, almost doubling the declination rate within the last seven years. The statistics show 67% of cases were not prosecuted, doubling from 2015, when the attorney’s office declined to prosecute 35% of cases. U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves said in an interview with the Washington Post that there were several reasons for not prosecuting less serious criminal cases, such as an unaccredited crime lab and police body-camera footage leading to severe scrutiny. Graves said his office has mostly declined to prosecute cases involving gun possession, drug possession, and burglary charges (Washington Examiner). Washington Post: Graves said footage from body-worn cameras has also increased the number of arrests prosecutors walk away from, as they review at an earlier stage whether police have gathered enough evidence to support a conviction (Washington Post).

Grand Jury Looking into Trump Takes Month-Long Recess
Politico: The Manhattan grand jury examining Donald Trump’s alleged role in a hush money payment to a porn star isn’t expected to hear evidence in the case for the next month largely due to a previously scheduled hiatus. The break would push any indictment of the former president to late April at the earliest, although it is possible that the grand jury’s schedule could change. In recent weeks, the Manhattan district attorney’s office hasn’t convened the panel on certain days (Politico). Washington Examiner: The former president is under various investigations in several different jurisdictions. A grand jury in Georgia is investigating Trump for his alleged interference in the 2020 election in the Peach State, while special counsel Jack Smith is investigating Trump for his alleged mishandling of classified documents and involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, among other investigations (Washington Examiner).

Kentucky’s GOP Lawmakers Override Governor’s Veto of Trans Bill
Associated Press: Republican lawmakers in Kentucky on Wednesday swept aside the Democratic governor’s veto of a bill regulating some of the most personal aspects of life for transgender young people — from banning access to gender-affirming health care to restricting the bathrooms they can use. The votes to override Gov. Andy Beshear’s veto were lopsided in both legislative chambers — where the GOP wields supermajorities — and came on the next-to-last day of this year’s legislative session. The debate is likely to spill over into this year’s gubernatorial campaign in Kentucky and could reach the courts if opponents follow through on a threat to mount a legal challenge against the bill (Associated Press). Alliance Defending Freedom: “Denying the truth that we are either male or female causes real harm to people, especially vulnerable children. Today, the Kentucky Legislature enacted vital protections for young children and parents to ensure they can’t be pressured into agreeing to life-altering, so-called ‘gender transition’ procedures (Alliance Defending Freedom).

Airlines Look to Trim Flights Entering Summer Due to Shortage of Air Traffic Controllers
Bloomberg: JetBlue Airways Corp. is preparing to trim New York flights during the upcoming “very busy” summer travel season after federal regulators asked carriers to reduce schedules by as much as 10% at some of the nation’s busiest airports. The reductions will occur because of a shortage in air-traffic controllers, even though JetBlue has added employees and is “good to go” for the uptick in traffic, Hayes said. Without cuts across the industry, congestion would be 45% worse than it was last summer, he said, citing the US Federal Aviation Administration. Delta Air Lines Inc. and United Airlines Holdings Inc. are also preparing to cut flights this summer to ease congestion and delays (Bloomberg). CNBC: Flight cancellations and delays were elevated during peak parts of 2022, and airlines scaled back schedules then to put more slack in the system (CNBC).

Washington Commanders on Purchase Offers: “I don’t see why it wouldn’t happen”
ESPN: The Josh Harris/Mitchell Rales group, which now includes Magic Johnson, officially submitted a fully financed bid for the Washington Commanders that meets Dan Snyder’s $6 billion asking price, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday. Canadian billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos also has submitted a fully funded $6 billion offer for the Commanders, sources told Schefter and ESPN’s Brian Windhorst on Tuesday. If either bid is accepted, the deal would break the previous record sale for a franchise, set in August, when a group led by Walmart heir Rob Walton bought the Denver Broncos for $4.65 billion (ESPN).  NBC: Commanders president Jason Wright believes that a sale is coming. “I don’t see why it wouldn’t,” Wright said. “I’m so confused by the skepticism. It is a potential transaction until it’s a transaction, but yeah” (NBC).
