I’m just leaving Augusta after a productive conversation about a critical piece of Maine’s offshore wind future.
The Offshore Wind Port Advisory Group1 is an exciting collaboration between nineteen members representing environmental, labor, fishing, and construction groups, as well as local communities and state government. We meet regularly to advise state officials on development of the green infrastructure Maine needs to seize the opportunities of the rapidly developing offshore wind market. A purpose-built floating offshore wind port – one of the first in the nation! – will support the manufacturing, marshaling, assembly, and installation of turbines and also act as an economic engine for the surrounding communities.
I’ve co-chaired the Offshore Wind Port Advisory Group since we started meeting in May 2022. Ultimately, we’ll advise state officials on a port location that will help Maine realize the environmental and economic benefits from this growing clean energy industry while reflecting community values and minimizing downsides. Through countless conversations with conservation advocates, labor organizers, state and local leaders, and more, we are striving to make the most of the climate, renewable energy, workforce development, and economic opportunities associated with offshore wind – while minimizing impacts on fishing and wildlife.
At today’s meeting, we discussed any potential adverse impacts that might arise with the construction and use of a port in each of the different proposed locations – including impacts to ecological features like wetlands. Today and throughout our rigorous work, our analysis has been informed by the best available science and data about how a port might affect the onshore and offshore environments, navigation, workforce opportunities, and the local economy.
As we near the end of this process, I’m looking forward to updating you about our collaborative recommendation on port siting and development. I’m confident that it will reflect extensive research, deep consideration, and our strong commitment to protecting Maine's environment, communities, and climate future.
