Here are some recent updates from the last few days.

Today, the South Carolina NAACP filed a brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to affirm a lower court’s decision that parts of South Carolina’s congressional map are racially gerrymandered. Republican lawmakers have asked the Court to reinstate the map. [link removed]

Last night, Shasta County, California’s Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 to hand count all ballots during the county’s next election. This vote comes despite a warning from California Attorney General Rob Bonta (D) that California and federal laws require electronic voting systems. The move is reminiscent of the attempts by Cochise County, Arizona to hand count ballots in last year’s midterm elections. [link removed]

Yesterday, the Idaho Senate passed a bill that would tighten proof of ID and residency requirements needed to register to vote. The bill now heads to the desk of Gov. Brad Little (R) and would require individuals to show proof of ID to register to vote. [link removed]

Also yesterday, a federal court ruled that Maine violated federal law when it sought to restrict a conservative group's use of the state's voter registration data. Maine alleged that the group wants to publish voters' information in violation of state law. [link removed]

Finally, yesterday a group of voters in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania filed a lawsuit against its election officials alleging that that voters were “disenfranchised” during the Nov. 8, 2022, midterm elections as a result of the defendants’ “misadministration of the election” in at least “40 election districts.”

Last week, the Colorado Republican Party asked the Federal Election Commission if it can establish a legal fund to challenge Colorado’s open primary law. This is the first step to filing a lawsuit over the election system, which allows unaffiliated voters to choose to vote in Republican primaries. [link removed]
