John, I hope you’ll join us in taking this Women’s History Month to reflect on the incredible women who have shaped the fight for a more fair democracy.
From leading the fight against gerrymandering, to facing down the Big Money groups pushing an Article V convention, to expanding our right to vote, the women of Common Cause are battling voter suppression and anti-democratic forces head-on at all levels.
You can join these women in making a huge difference for our democracy by signing up for our Action Team – and registering for our week of action next week to honor our late president, Karen Hobert Flynn.
This month, we’re celebrating some recent, women-led victories, along with the women on our team who made them possible. We invite you to read about this work at our website, where we’ve highlighted seven major democracy wins powered by women.
One of these women, Becky Harper, is at the center of our landmark Supreme Court case challenging partisan gerrymandering in North Carolina. A longtime supporter and Board member of Common Cause North Carolina, she’s been helping us fight for fair maps and checks and balances in court.
You can spread the word about this case with Becky Harper’s own words on Twitter here.
We’ve also been celebrating Lady Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss – two Georgia poll workers who were targeted by election deniers in 2020, and who remained committed to our democracy and the public good despite pressure from conspiracy theorists and even Donald Trump himself.
You can share our video about these two brave poll workers here.
As we celebrate these women for their bravery and commitment to protecting everyday voters like you and me, we’re also honoring two women who we’ve lost this past month.
Karen Hobert Flynn was a trailblazer who spent her career fighting for a better democracy with Common Cause, including as our president since 2016. As a state leader, she secured landmark reforms – including helping win Connecticut's groundbreaking full public finance system, numerous ethics laws, and disclosure laws.
A fearless, persistent advocate for a better democracy, Karen spent her entire life in public service, working for a principle that we will all keep striving for: that each of us matters, and that we all deserve a say in our future.
We also want to honor Representative Patricia Schroeder, who served as a member of Common Cause’s National Governing Board from 2009 to 2015, and on the Common Cause Florida Advisory Board after that.
I'm so grateful to these women for their leadership and guidance – and I'm thankful for the many women who are continuing the work every single day to make our government more transparent, inclusive, and accountable. As we fight for a better democracy, we’re glad to have you with us.
Thanks for all you do,
Jordan Davis, Interim Co-President
and the team at Common Cause
