John,
Today marks sixty-nine days since the United States Treasury Department began taking extraordinary measures to avoid a default that would crash the world economy, send inflation soaring, and cost millions of workers to lose their jobs.
Sometime in early June, those extraordinary measures will run out, and the United States will default for the first time in history―unless Congress passes simple legislation to allow our country to pay for the spending that has already been passed into law. Republicans in the House have refused to pass that legislation―holding our nation hostage.
The worst thing about these hostage-takers is that they won’t come out and ask for their ransom. Some Republicans (including Speaker McCarthy) mused before the election that they wanted to force cuts to Social Security and Medicare. Others are claiming that they want unspecified spending cuts. Now, they are signaling that they won’t make their demands known until after triggering a default.
Make no mistake, Social Security and Medicare are ABSOLUTELY on the table. For every public proclamation that Republicans won’t touch them, there is a private insistence that our earned benefits must be cut. We will stop them! Donate $7 to fight back!
The American people agree: Social Security works. It has paid benefits in full and on time for nearly a century, and when millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share, it will do so for another century. The only thing Americans have to fear about Social Security is Republican plans to cut it.
Thanks,
Michael Phelan Social Security Works
