Hello John,

Did you see Max’s email about SSA funding? I wanted to make sure you didn’t miss it. We need your immediate help to fight back against hardliners in the U.S. House of Representatives who want to ram through an agenda that includes drastic cuts to the Social Security Administration (SSA) and its services relied upon by growing numbers of retirees.

So please, if you haven’t yet signed our Emergency Petition to Congress, take a moment to do it now. And if you have already signed it: Thank you. You’ve taken the first step in ensuring your views are heard at the highest levels of our government. Now please consider making a donation in whatever amount you can afford, so that we can continue our crucial work on Capitol Hill to stop cuts to the benefits, programs and services that millions of older Americans rely on.

Dear John,

Lawmakers determined to slash Social Security are now taking aim at the Social Security Administration (SSA) to extract drastic cuts from the agency relied on by millions of older workers and retirees. That’s because the strategy of so-called “fiscal hawks” in Congress has been: if you can’t cut benefits, cut SSA funding.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy wants to use the appropriations process to revert spending back to 2022 levels, which would impact SSA especially hard as current funding is barely enough to enable the agency to tread water. And it would lead to more office closures, staffing reductions and longer wait times.

The refusal by Speaker McCarthy and others to provide adequate funding for SSA demonstrates a failure to acknowledge the value of and the real need for the critically important services SSA provides to American workers, retirees, workers with disabilities and their families. This kind of penny-wise, pound-foolish budget approach imposes undue hardship and frustration on millions of Americans and their families.

Please tell your member of Congress, “I OPPOSE CUTS TO THE SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION” by signing our Emergency Petition today. Your signed petition will help the National Committee send a clear and unwavering message to lawmakers that you oppose any budget cuts that would hurt the benefits or services seniors are relying on for a secure retirement.

Bottom line, imposing hardships on Social Security beneficiaries to receive information or help from SSA can undermine public support for Social Security itself — which is ultimately the goal of some politicians in Washington who want to destroy this popular and effective program.

But as we’ve seen recently, nothing is off the table for those determined to cut earned benefits that growing numbers of Americans are counting on in their retirement.

These are your earned benefits on the line — because decent service in administering Social Security is itself part of those benefits. It’s vital we fight to strengthen them, and with your signed Petition today, that is exactly what we will continue to do!

Sincerely,

Max Richtman
