John,

The countdown to our biggest local election in history is on! Here's your monthly update from the Green Party.

The need to move further faster to tackle the climate crisis was highlighted in stark terms with the publication of the latest IPCC report. It warned of a “small window of opportunity” to curb global warming which co-leader Adrian Ramsay said should be a “loud alarm bell for the Government”. Ahead of the publication of its updated net zero strategy tomorrow, he called on the Government to introduce a carbon tax and massively increase investment in home insulation and renewables.

The Chancellor Jeremy Hunt failed to include the environment and public services in his Spring budget. Pitched as a budget for growth, co-leader Carla Denyer said: “This is yet another Conservative budget that fails to address the climate emergency or the crisis facing our public services. We know from past experience that an obsessive focus on economic growth enriches the few, impoverishes many and wrecks our climate while trashing the natural world. Carla also appeared on BBC News to speak about the issue.

The appearance of Boris Johnson before the relatively obscure Parliamentary Privileges Committee was significant MP Caroline Lucas wrote in an article for Metro as his conduct over Partygate has put “functioning democratic systems at risk”. He must be held to account for his dishonesty, misleading parliament and reckless willingness to undermine constitutional conventions. “That doesn’t mean our conventions are perfect but they’re what we have, and our system relies on them being honoured.”

The topic has never been more dominant politically with the Tories and Labour vying with each over their plans for economic growth. But did you know this was a crucial issue for our party’s founders back in 1972? A Guardian article on 6 December 1973 wrote the party’s “chief object will not be more economic growth but less or better still no growth at all.” There was a fascinating LSE panel discussion on economic growth with Caroline Lucas and Molly Scott Cato to mark our 50th anniversary earlier this month, which you can catch up on here (to get subtitles on click the CC box next to the settings 'wheel') 🔽

LSE are also hosting a free exhibition called 'Clothing this Naked Earth': politics and the planet that contains documents from the party's archive - well worth a visit, especially with the longer and brighter days!

Join us 9th May on zoom to discuss the green vote, green gains and the breakthroughs we make in these local elections! In 2022 we saw serious Green gains across England and Wales. 2023 will be a landmark year for local elections, after which we will have more Green Councillors than ever before. This year, we want to defend existing seats, break through into new areas and grow the number of committed, hard-working Green councillors fighting for more democratic townhalls across England and Wales.

Did you miss our event on building a more equal society on 20th March? You can catch a recording here (click the subtitles/closed caption box next to the settings 'wheel' to get those up!) 🔽

Good luck to all of our brilliant activists and campaigners working tirelessly to get more Greens elected!
