*ADC Requests Syrian TPS Redesignation and Extension*

_________________________________________

Washington, D.C. | July 31, 2019 | www.adc.org – The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) filed a formal request this week with the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), urging Acting Secretary Kevin McAleenan to redesignate Syria for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). In accordance with 8 U.S.C. § 1254a, the Secretary of Homeland Security may designate a foreign country for TPS due to conditions in the country that temporarily prevent the country's nationals from returning safely, such as an ongoing armed conflict.

ADC is especially concerned for the welfare and human rights of the innocent civilians who are affected by the conflict in Syria. ADC's Legal Department regularly provides pro-bono legal advice to Syrian nationals about refugee status, temporary protected status, and asylum in the United States. ADC previously submitted requests to extend and renew the designation of Syria for TPS in April 2013, November 2014, February 2016, and January 2018.

It is imperative that Syria is redesignated for TPS so that Syrian refugees who have fled to the United States since last year's redesignation can register for TPS for the first time.TPS beneficiaries are protected from the threat of deportation and are allowed to obtain employment authorization in the United States.

The last Syrian TPS renewal [ [link removed] ] was issued in early 2018. By the end of 2018 [ [link removed] ], the total number of Syrians who have been forcibly displaced reached 13 million, including 6.2 million internally displaced persons. From January to April 2018 alone, more than 920,000 Syrians [ [link removed] ] were displaced inside of the country.

If you have a question regarding TPS or other immigration-related matters, please contact the ADC Legal Department by email at [email protected] [ mailto:[email protected] ] or by phone at (202) 244-2990. _________________________________________
