The David Horowitz Freedom Center led the way in fighting for a K-12 bill of rights.

Back at a 2006 press conference, David Horowitz began by pointing out that, “I want to begin by pointing to this sign, which is the theme of our conference and the theme of our campaign. And since people seem to have a hard time reading the English language these days, I want to point out that it says, “Take politics out of the classroom.” Not “Take liberal politics out of the classroom.” Not “Take malice politics out of the classroom.” And it doesn’t say “Put conservative politics in the classroom.” It doesn’t say take Democratic politics out of the classroom, and it doesn’t say put Republican politics in. It says, “Take politics out of the classroom.” This is not a left, right, or oughtn’t to be a left against right battle.”

After a generation of political classroom indoctrination, most Americans agree.

Majorities of Americans are supportive of fellow citizens, members of Congress, and professional athletes speaking their minds about politics, but not public school teachers in the classroom – according to the newest edition of the Grinnell College National Poll.

The deviation is pretty sharp. And parents of public school children are even less supportive of classroom indoctrination.

A majority (57%) say it is inappropriate for this group to speak about politics within their classrooms. Among parents of children in public schools, 41% say it is appropriate, while 58% say it is not.

These numbers are striking because the rest of the poll largely supports leftist social priorities and agendas.
