Friend —
Elissa first decided to run for office in 2018 and in the wake of Trump’s election. She had never been to a political meeting or a political fundraiser. But from the moment she got in, she’s been concerned that many Americans have fundamentally lost trust in our government and our political process.
It’s why she knew from day one that she would never accept a dime of corporate PAC money. She never wanted her constituents to question why she was voting a certain way, or have any doubt that she was fighting for their interests, and their interests alone.
She’s one of the few members of Congress who have made this pledge from day one, and actually stuck to it. But it goes beyond just sticking to her promise: she’s actually put her money (or in this case, legislation) where her mouth is.
She’s sponsored and co-sponsored a number of bills aimed at fighting corruption and restoring trust in our system. She signed onto the TRUST in Congress Act, which is aimed at preventing Members of Congress and their spouses from buying and trading stocks while in office and the Ban Conflicted Trading Act, which also prevents Members of Congress from trading individual stocks and serving on corporate boards while in office. Elissa feels strongly that you shouldn’t be able to use the privileged information you receive as a representative to make money.
In her previous races, Elissa’s opponents have taken the opposite approach. They’ve taken massive amounts of money from corporate PACs and special interest groups and even voted for bills that would enshrine the Citizens United ruling into law, allowing super PACs to spend unlimited amounts of money on political campaigns.
By contrast, 89% of the contributions to Elissa’s Congressional campaigns were $100 or less. She doesn’t fund her campaign by doing the bidding of corporations, but with generous grassroots supporters chipping in what they can, when they can.
For Elissa, this is a matter of protecting our democracy. Can you please make a $3 contribution to Elissa Slotkin’s campaign for Senate to help her continue to fight big money in our politics?
